This is a basic introductory demonstration to the nature of dry ice (solid carbon dioxide), which sublimes (goes straight from being a solid to a gas) under standard conditions. Here I describe some of its properties and show how the gas it gives off as it sublimes creates a layer of gas on the bottom that makes it easy to slide it around due to low friction (like an air hockey table).
